The word guru is derived from the Sanskrit root words, gu and ru. Gu means “darkness” or “ignorance”, and ru means “dispeller.” Therefore, a guru is the dispeller of darkness or ignorance.
The first full moon (Purṇimā refers to “full-moon” day) after the summer solstice in the month of Āṣāḍh (July-August) is known as Gurupūrṇimā.
It is also known as Vyasa Purnima, for it marks the birthday of Vedavyāsa, the sage who authored the Mahābhāratam and compiled the Vēdaḥs.
The word “Guru” in Sanskrit means “heavy” and means the one who removes heaviness or the “dispeller of darkness.” A Guru dispels a seeker’s ignorance, allowing him to experience the source of creation within. The day of Gurupūrṇimā is traditionally the time when seekers offer the Guru their gratitude and receive his blessings. Gurupūrṇimā is also considered an especially beneficial day for Yogic practices and meditation.
Guru is the one that dispels ignorance, in the way that the luminosity of the moon dispels the darkness of night. Ignorance can not exist in the presence of wisdom, as darkness cannot exist in the presence of luminosity. In Vedic calendar is traditionally celebrated to honour one’s chosen spiritual teachers or leaders. During this full moon your mind is more open to receive transformational wisdom!
Let’s honour our Gurus and Gurvis, our spiritual teachers who put light in our path of self-knowledge and all wise teachers who had a great input in our Souls journey!
You can honour them with prayers, offerings, mantras, remembrance, meditating on them, taking care of them in a way, by lighting up candles for them, offering flowers and fruits…in any other form you feel like.
Teacher – Student mantra:
Oṃ
Sa ha nāvavatu
Sa ha nau bhunaktu
Sa ha vīryam karavāvahai
Tejas vināvadhītamastu
Mā vidviṣāvahai
Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥMay we both (teacher – student) be protected. May we both (teacher – student) be nourished. May we together (teacher – student) acquire the capacity to study and understand what we study. May our study be brilliant. May we not misunderstand eachother. Oṃ peace, peace, peace.
