Pañca Mahābhūta: Pṛthvī ~ Earth Element

PAÑCA MAHĀBHŪTA

Five great elements, also five physical elements, is a group of five basic elements, which, according to Hinduism, is the basis of all cosmic creation.

These elements have different characteristics and these also account for different faculties of human experience. In Āyurveda and Indian philosophy, the human body is considered to be made of these five elements.

The 5 elements of nature are known in Sanskrit as the Pañca Mahābhūta. They form the basic building blocks of the universe, every person, animal, plant and thing is composed of various combinations of the Pañcabhūtas. Earth, Water and Fire are tangible things that can be touched or seen; they exist as matter. Space / Ether and Air are intangible, yet they exist everywhere around us, even though we cannot see it. Earth, Water and Fire are therefore easier for us to understand than Space and Air because they have more concrete forms. However, all five elements are equally important and interrelated.

THE 5 ELEMENTS – ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ / TATTVAS ARE:

  • Pṛthvī (Earth) ΓΗ
  • Āpas / Jala (Water) ΝΕΡΟ
  • Agni / Tejas (Fire) ΦΩΤΙΑ
  • Vāyu (Air) ΑΕΡΑΣ
  • Ākāśa (Space) ΧΩΡΟΣ

Pṛthvī or Bhūmi (earth) — represents solidity, stability, and grounding. Our physical body is on the level of this element – the Earth Element Pṛthvī. As it consist of matter at the first level of the 5 elements, then it is subject of change with the universal laws that govern matter / Earth Element Pṛthvī.

EARTH ELEMENT ~ PṚTHVĪ

The journey to consciousness begins at PṚTHVĪ, THE EARTH ELEMENT. This foundational element is represented by a yellow square, and it corresponds to MŪLĀDHĀRA CHAKRA, the root or 1st chakra. This aspect of nature governs groundedness, stability, strength, permanence, patience, fertility, and security. It manifests in the body in the solid structures of our bones, muscles, nails, hair, and teeth. Its associated sense organ is the nose.

When the Earth element is out of balance, people tend to feel fatigue, insecurity, weakness, fear, possessive, greedy, materialistic, lack of energy, or loss of appetite. Issues with our skin, nails, teeth, hair, and bones can also point to an imbalance.

In Yogic terms, when we say “Earth,” we not only refer to the planet but also to the most fundamental element in the making of our physical selves, and of everything for that matter. Our physical self is essentially a combination of earth, water, air, fire, and akasha. Earth is the most basic and stable of the five elements. When it comes to the energy system and chakras, the earth element is associated with the Mūlādhāra. It is the basis that all the other elements build on. Though the element of earth is part of physical matter around us too, it is best we start to perceive and understand it from the basis of our lives, because most people only really experience their own body and mind. Knowing and experiencing the element of earth from within is part of the Yogic process.

The essence of your physicality is formed by the earth that you have taken in. Earth is the core physicality of who you are, but it is getting in the way. You can easily transform water and air. Fire takes some effort, but it is not really in the way. Just getting that little earth out of your way is complex because you are identified with it and you are trying to change it. What is a steppingstone has become a hurdle now because you are identified with it. (by Sadhguru)

Pṛthvī is also known as Bhumi which means to be’ or to exist’. It also means the ground and earth we live upon, which signifies existence In PṚTHVĪ tattva, the particles of energy have been condensed until they appear almost static, rotating only within the immediate space surrounding each atom Thus, in this tattva, energy appears as concrete matter in its solid, liquid or gaseous forms. In PṚTHVĪ tattva, energy vibrates at a much lower frequency than in the preceding tattvas and can be perceived as yellow light. Therefore, in tattva shuddhi the yantra of PṚTHVĪ tattva is visualized as a yellow square. PṚTHVĪ tattva is attributed with the qualities of solidity, weight and cohesion. In the physical body it is the solidity in the cellular structure of bones and other and creates weight and density Prithvi, having evolved out of the preceding tattvas, also contains their qualities, however, smell is its predominating quality. The subtle perception of Pṛthvīyis gandha or smell, which is conveyed through the sense organ of the nose. As opposed to vayu tattva, Pṛthvī tattva brings stability and permanence in ever respect, physically, mentally and in the environment. It is most conducive for material profit and the pursuit of worldly ventures.

Physically, Pṛthvī tattva is located in the region between the toes and the knees. Mentally, it is related to the conscious and subconscious levels of mind. Its psychic location is in MŪLĀDHĀRA CHAKRA. The spiritual experiences related to this tattva correspond with the dimensions of bhuloka and Annamāyākośa, the gross body. The journey to consciousness begins at PRITHIVI, THE EARTH ELEMENT. This foundational element is represented by a yellow square, and it corresponds to MULADHARA CHAKRA, the root or 1st chakra. METHODS TO CONNECT WITH EARTH ELEMENT AND ENERGY

  • Put your hands in the earth and feel the soil, smell it and let the energy flow from your hands into your nadis.
  • Earthing – Get Wet and Prostrate. When you earth the electrical connections, you keep it wet because it conducts better when it is wet. This is why in all the Indian temples, people are making their bodies wet, and lying down on the floor in prostration. This is not just earthing. You want the entire body to be in touch with that earth which is energized. Men go with their upper body bare, and women go with wet clothes. This contact with nature, whether its earth, air or water is most important. Without this contact, the body will slowly lose its integrity and its stability. It may still survive, it may not die tomorrow morning, but it loses a variety of capabilities that it has come with. The possibilities that the human system carries is lost as you lose contact with the natural elements. (by Sadhguru)
  • Walk barefoot in the soil, ground, grass, sand, let the telluric energy current from the earth to flow inside your physical body activating the energy body. This technique give the opportunity to extreme mental & emotional energies to ground and give space to our mind and soul to realign with beneficial energies of Macrocosm. When we ground our self, humbleness and purity is revealed more in us, resonating with our Spiritual Heart.
  • Practice Śavāsana or even sleep on the floor. It helps the physical body to rest deeply, relax, release tension, recharge and reprogrammed.
  • Eat proper meals with high quality natural food, raw or simple cooking. Our vital body is regulated and supported by food, the quality of food offers the best to our physical body and this energy will be transformed and transmute to the energy body later on.

TELLŪRIC CURRECT – EARTH CURRECT

A telluric current (from Latin tellūs, “earth”), or Earth current, is an electric current which moves underground or through the sea. Telluric currents result from both natural causes and human activity, and the discrete currents interact in a complex pattern. The currents are extremely low frequency and travel over large areas at or near the surface of the Earth.

Telluric currents are phenomena observed in the Earth’s crust and mantle. Including minor processes, there are at least 32 different mechanisms which cause telluric currents. The strongest are primarily geomagnetically induced currents, which are induced by changes in the outer part of the Earth’s magnetic field, which are usually caused by interactions between the solar wind and the magnetosphere or solar radiation effects on the ionosphere. Telluric currents flow in the surface layers of the earth. (Wikipedia)
